CATS have been taking up a lot of my free time lately.
In the large grassy area that connects our backyard with all our neighbors live about six wild cats...three females, two males, and one young kitten. There are a number of areas locally that have had problems with hoarders or feral colonies, but I had no idea this existed outside of large cities until I started noticing the ones under our porch.
Apparently, the most effective thing to do (if you're going to be humane about it) is catch them, spay or neuter them, and return them to where they were caught. This limits the common annoyance factors of the males, stops the kittens, and most importantly, keeps other cats from simply moving in on the absent cats' territory.
So one of the females, who only ever let me come within about two feet of her, ran away from our upstairs neighbor and jumpted - twice - off of his second floor deck. I found her last week with a badly injured leg. After being turned away by three vets who wanted to charge us outrageously, I finally found a kind vet who is giving us a huge discount on her treatment, and not charging us at all for the fact that he is keeping her for two weeks until her stitches can be removed. Thanks to some help from PAWS and kind locals as well, it looks like all will be well for Miss Airborne, as she is healing and spayed. Now all that's left now is to find her a nice barn to live in so she doesn't have access to the deck.
Now on to catching the pregnant, friendly one...anybody want a kitten?
